1983

Think Big. Plan Big.

“Holding a high position in the Federal Government made it almost impossible to think of quitting my job to start building homes. But my desire was so strong that to minimize risk, I convinced my boss to allow me to take a one-year leave of absence. I immediately bought two lots from Campeau Corporation on Uplands Drive in Hunt Club Woods. It was 1983 and the model was called the Bennington Ultra. Richcraft was born,” said Kris Singhal.

1985

The Hunt
Club Park

Hunt Club Park had become one of the most desirable communities. Not only was the project the backbone of Richcraft Homes, but it also put Richcraft on the map as a major player in the Ottawa building industry. Company owner Kris Singhal said, ” I still feel great pride whenever I have the opportunity to drive through the area. I cannot believe it was Richcraft that developed Hunt Club Park.”

1988

Kanata
Lakes

In 1988, Richcraft purchased over 180 serviced lots in phase one of Kanata Lakes. Located in the centre of the Silicon Valley North community and spread around Club Link’s Kanata Golf & Country Club, the Kanata Lakes project was unique. Half of the lots backed onto the golf course fairways, on Zokol and Westlock Streets, surrounded by a series of natural ponds.

1989

The Ottawa Business Park

Eventually, Richcraft moved operations out of a basement and into their first head office space on Colonnade Road. Soon enough, even those office spaces became too small to accommodate company growth. In 1989, Richcraft acquired two serviced blocks from the City of Ottawa in the Ottawa Business Park. Richcraft built and moved into the first building of 40,000 square feet. In 1997, they added a 4,000 square foot centralized Design Centre to serve homebuyers better.

1990

The Decade of the South

Richcraft signed a conditional agreement with Campeau Corporation for one of the biggest land deals in Ottawa-Carleton’s history. A contract developed to buy about 2,400 acres of unserviced land in Gloucester was officially known as the regions South Urban Community. The land stretched into Gloucester and Nepean, straddling both sides of the Rideau River.

1992

La Croisee
in Aylmer

“Manju and I have a history in Aylmer. It was the place where we became homeowners all those years ago. It seemed fitting that we should build a Richcraft community there. La Croisee means crossroads – and true to its name, the harmony between nature and township remains at the heart of this unique Richcraft community,” said Kris Singhal.

1993

Woodroffe
Classics

Richcraft was able to secure two large parcels of land – 100 acres for Woodroffe Estates and 75 acres referred to as Forest Gate. Richcraft’s goal was to give Ottawa homebuyers a choice. Development in Woodroffe Estates began in 1993 with a land purchase expected to be complete by the end of 2010. Located at the Southwest corner of the former city of Nepean, Woodroffe Estates ranked as one of the most desirable communities for first-time homebuyers, upscale buyers and mature homeowners.

1996

Riverside
South

Richcraft and Urbandale had jointly formulated a marketing strategy and the project opened to the public in 1996. The joint venture was one of the largest projects undertaken in Ottawa – consisting of over 4,000 acres of land and approved to accommodate a population base of 50,000 people or 18,000 to 20,000 residences.

1997

The Richcraft Design Centre

Staffed by designers and a full cost administration team, Richcraft’s Design Centre was a new concept for Ottawa and only the second of its kind in the city. Many Ottawa builders watched Richcraft’s success and followed this lead. Kris Singhal said, “without Manju’s support, it would have been impossible to move forward the way we did. She has always been a great source of inspiration, strength and pride for me. In many ways, she is the reason for my courage and my drive to do so well in the field I love.”

2000

Towards
the Sky

After 18 years in business, once the company had acquired a range of building expertise, Richcraft started looking for other opportunities. In the early 2000s, as the baby boomers were reaching their mid-50s, the City of Ottawa experienced new growth in high-rise concrete products. This new market opened an opportunity. Until then, Richcraft had never built more than a three and a half story house. In the spring of 2004, the company completed its first concrete high-rise, 570 Laurier.

2002

Spring Ridge

The Regional Group was responsible for large land acquisitions and putting Richcraft and Braebury Homes of Kingston together. In partnership, Richcraft acquired 120 acres of land on the east side of Trim Road in Orleans. Richcraft built 184 single-family homes and 138 townhomes. The area was so popular that the majority of the project sold out in only two years.

2004

Place de Gouverneurs

Richcraft’s second concrete project, Places de Gouverneurs, sat on 20 acres and was promoted as urban living at its finest. Phase 1 included three buildings – five and six floors with 128 one and two-bedroom suites. The community project received approval to accommodate 940 units, a community centre and parkettes.

2005

The Galleria Phase 1

Now built, the 12-story condo project is called The Galleria. It features 148 one and two-bedroom plus study suites. Richcraft’s goal was to create an eclectic urban lifestyle. Judging by the response received from homebuyers, Richcraft had successfully achieved their goal.

2013

Recreation Complex

Richcraft was extremely happy to be part of the new recreation complex in the community of Kanata. The 77,000 square foot building offers community and recreation facilities including, a fitness facility, two large gymnasiums, an eight-lane 25-meter pool, a whirlpool, and various multipurpose rooms. The site layout provides outdoor recreation areas with two large artificial turf sports fields, a children’s play area with a splash pad, two basketball courts and a skateboard plaza.

2014

The Richcraft Sensplex

Richcraft was excited to join hands with The Ottawa Senators to be a part of a new skating arena complex. The new facility was completed under an innovative Public-Private Partnership (P3) between the City of Ottawa and the Ottawa Community Ice Partners (OCIP). OCIP includes the Ottawa Senators Hockey Club, the Ottawa Senators Alumni and Morley Hoppner Group. The Richcraft Sensplex is complete with four arenas, including an updated existing Potvin Arena and three new regulation NHL size arenas.

2015

The Bowery Condos

Ideally located in the core area of downtown Ottawa, Richcraft completed another land assembly by purchasing parking lots and six residential properties. Zoned for a 12-storey building, Richcraft received approval for 18 storeys and 248 units. Since entering into the Ottawa condominium market, Richcraft has acquired several blocks of land suitable for condominium development.

2016

Richcraft Hall,
Richcraft Live

Richcraft’s philanthropic profile expanded with Richcraft Hall and Richcraft Live. In partnership with Carleton University, Richcraft Hall was established on campus. The 55-million-dollar facility is home to programs such as The Norman Patterson School of International Affairs and The Canada-India Centre for Excellence. Richcraft Live was a partnership between Richcraft, Senators Sports & Entertainment, Live Nation and the Canadian Tire Centre bringing live music and experiences to the city.

2017

Richcraft Rentals

The Brownstone community in Cyrville was the first community to be identified for the residential rental’s portfolio with a total of 88 units and occupancy starting in late 2015 through 2018. Fieldstone Flats in Barrhaven followed shortly after, converting to 75 rental units with occupancy that started later in 2016 through 2018.

2019

Mountshannon

Located in Barrhaven, a total of 179 units had been planned for several years and was the first purpose-built Richcraft Rentals community with a new product, Terrace Homes, in addition to standard flats and back-to-back townhomes, with occupancy that began in October 2019 and ended in 2021. Neighbouring Fieldstone Flats, this community offers convenient access to public transit with top-notch schools and recreation close by.

2021

COVID-19

When COVID-19 appeared and everything went digital, Richcraft used Yardi and ECI cloud-based technologies to work through the pandemic that enabled Richcraft to transition towards a paperless environment. Everything from new releases, model tours, design centre appointments and more went virtual. The Richcraft Rentals portfolio also expanded with Coventry Commons at St. Laurent, Hennessy Court in Riverside South, and Mapleton in Kanata.

2022

The Charlotte

Ottawa’s premier condominium, The Charlotte, was developed by Richcraft in the heart of Sandy Hill. The building features 197 suites with 14 storeys, retail space, and world-class amenities. Surrounded by older homes, embassies and an established neighbourhood vibe, The Charlotte exemplifies the principle of seamless integration with upscale refinement.
